Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is facing growing calls to provide further clarification regarding Ghana’s reported involvement in Christmas Day 2025 airstrikes targeting ISIS positions in Nigeria.
The issue emerged after the minister disclosed during a policy discussion at Chatham House in London that Ghana collaborated with the United States following a request from Nigeria in relation to the counter-terrorism operation.
Reacting to the statement, security consultant Richard Kumadoh has called on the Foreign Affairs Ministry to provide a comprehensive public explanation regarding the nature of Ghana’s involvement.
According to him, the minister’s comments were too vague and left several critical questions unanswered.
“He has not explained the nature of the support, the kind of support, the terms of that support, what the national interest is, and how it benefits international security arrangements,” Kumadoh stated.
He emphasized that because the matter touches on national security and international relations, the public deserves clarity about Ghana’s role in the operation.
Kumadoh further noted that statements made by officials who manage sensitive national institutions—particularly the Foreign Affairs Ministry—must follow established communication and security protocols.
He added that once such statements enter the public domain and attract national attention, authorities have a responsibility to provide clear explanations and context.
“Once such statements attract public interest, they become matters of national concern and must be properly explained,” he said.
The disclosure has sparked public debate about Ghana’s possible role in regional security operations, particularly regarding whether the country provided logistical, intelligence, or operational support in the anti-terrorism action.
Observers say further clarification from the Foreign Affairs Ministry could help address concerns about Ghana’s security commitments, international partnerships, and diplomatic protocols.
As calls continue for an official briefing to explain the full scope of Ghana’s involvement in the operation, GhanaNewsOnline and News Volta Parliament & Political Desk will keep you informed.
