“African Unity Under Threat: Torgbui Fiti V Condemns Attacks in South Africa”

The Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area and President of the Forum of Kings and Traditional Leaders, Torgbi Fiti V, has issued a strong appeal for restraint, unity, and solidarity among Africans following recent tensions and reported acts of violence in South Africa.

In a heartfelt address to traditional authorities, political leaders, and citizens across the continent, Torgbi Fiti V expressed deep concern over what he described as “regrettable acts of hostility” directed at fellow Africans living within South Africa’s borders. Speaking with what he termed “utmost respect, deep empathy, and sincere concern,” the revered traditional leader emphasized that the current moment calls for unity rather than division.

“This is not the time for xenophobic acts. This is not the hour to turn against those who share in our African identity,” he stated, cautioning against allowing economic hardship and social pressures to fuel hostility toward migrants and non-nationals from other African countries.

He stressed that many of those affected are individuals “seeking dignity, opportunity, and their rightful place in society,” and warned that targeting them undermines the shared values and historical struggles that bind African nations together.

Torgbi Fiti V further underscored that division weakens national cohesion and erodes the moral authority of African societies, particularly those like South Africa, which have long been regarded as symbols of resilience and liberation. He noted that attributing complex socio-economic challenges to fellow Africans is misguided and counterproductive.

“This is not the time for blaming,” he said. “The challenges we face require collective responsibility, not confrontation.”

The traditional ruler also delivered a firm condemnation of violence, describing it as a destructive force that offers no solution to hardship. According to him, violence only deepens suffering, destroys trust among communities, and creates long-term instability.

“This is not the time for violence. It multiplies suffering, destroys trust, and sows seeds of instability,” he warned.

Calling for renewed commitment to African unity, Torgbi Fiti V urged leaders, communities, and citizens to embrace dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation as the continent navigates its socio-economic challenges. He reaffirmed the role of traditional leaders as custodians of culture and peace, tasked with guiding their people toward harmony and shared progress.

His remarks come at a time when concerns over xenophobia and social tensions continue to spark debate across Africa, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated efforts to promote inclusion, economic opportunity, and peaceful coexistence across borders.

The statement has since been welcomed by sections of the public and traditional leadership circles, who view it as a timely intervention aimed at preserving the spirit of Pan-Africanism and safeguarding human dignity across the continent.
