The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has been named Chief Patron of the Volta Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) following a high-level breakfast engagement held at the Residency in Ho.
The meeting brought together members of SWAG, sports stakeholders, and government officials to discuss strategies for developing and promoting sports talent across the Volta Region.
Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration between government and sports media to identify, nurture, and promote young talents, particularly at the school and grassroots levels.
A notable presence at the engagement was veteran sports journalist Kwabena Yeboah, whose contribution to Ghana’s sports sector was praised by the Minister as “invaluable.”

Outlining government’s commitment to sports development, Hon. Gunu announced key initiatives aimed at transforming the region into a hub for athletic excellence. These include:
- The establishment of a multi-purpose sports facility to support schools and community-based sporting activities
- Plans to develop a FIFA Category 2 standard stadium in the region
- The creation of a dedicated sports secretariat to systematically identify and nurture talent across districts
According to the Minister, these interventions are designed to build a strong pipeline of athletes while creating opportunities for youth development and regional pride.
Expressing gratitude for his new role, Hon. Gunu reaffirmed his commitment to supporting sports growth in the region.
“I am deeply grateful to SWAG for conferring on me the role of Chief Patron in the Volta Region,” he said, pledging to work closely with stakeholders to elevate sports development.
