Volta Region Rolls Out Two-Year Inclusion Project for Mothers and Girls Living with Developmental Disabilities

By Hebrews Pouyeli Kumako

Stakeholders across the Volta Region have been urged to support efforts to protect and promote the rights of mothers and girl children living with developmental disabilities through a new two-year inclusion project.

The appeal was made during the launch of the “Invisible No More” initiative by Kekeli Foundation Ghana and Plan International Ghana in Ho. The project seeks to tackle stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion while empowering mothers through leadership training, livelihood support, community sensitization, and advocacy.

Speaking at the event, gender advocate and Ho Technical University lecturer Charlotte Kpogli-Dzadey said many mothers of children with developmental disabilities continue to face abandonment and discrimination, citing data indicating that nearly 98 percent have been left by their spouses. She stressed that the project aims to amplify the voices of these mothers and challenge misconceptions that they and their children are cursed.

The initiative, funded by Global Affairs Canada through Plan International Ghana, will be implemented in four districts of the Volta Region, including Ho Municipality. It will provide leadership training for 60 mothers, establish self-advocacy groups, engage schools and health institutions, and offer livelihood support to improve the economic well-being of affected families.

Participants pledged their commitment to working together to create a more inclusive society where mothers and children living with developmental disabilities can enjoy equal rights, dignity, and opportunities.
