President John Dramani Mahama has announced the successful resumption of operations at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), marking a major breakthrough in Ghana’s energy sector recovery.
Delivering his State of the Nation Address in Parliament and monitored by News Volta, the President disclosed that TOR has completed extensive turnaround maintenance and has, for the first time since 2018, resumed the processing of crude oil into petroleum products.
According to President Mahama, the revival of TOR is a critical milestone in the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s energy security, reduce fuel import dependency, stabilize petroleum prices, and boost industrial productivity.
“Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to announce that Tema Oil Refinery is back. The new management of the refinery has successfully completed extensive turnaround maintenance, and I am happy to inform this House that this August, for the first time since 2018, the refinery has commenced processing crude oil into petroleum products again,” he stated.
The President assured Ghanaians that energy sector reforms remain firmly on course, stressing his administration’s unwavering commitment to restoring confidence in the sector, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring sustainable and affordable energy supply nationwide.
“Let me assure our countrymen and women that the energy sector reforms continue unabated. I remain fully committed to turning around the sector, strengthening its foundations, and ensuring reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy security for our nation,” he emphasized.
President Mahama explained that the revival of TOR will not only help reduce Ghana’s fuel import bill but also stabilize fuel supply, create jobs, and enhance national energy resilience. He added that ongoing reforms across the petroleum and power sectors are designed to promote transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability.
Energy analysts and industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a major step toward restoring Ghana’s refining capacity and strengthening domestic fuel production.
The resumption of operations at TOR is expected to significantly support Ghana’s 24-hour economy agenda, industrial growth, and overall economic stability.
