The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has hosted a high-level delegation from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Grid Company in Ho, where plans were unveiled to address persistent low voltage and power outages in the Volta Region and parts of Oti.
Leading the ECG delegation, Acting Managing Director Ing. Kwame Kpekpena disclosed that government has released funding for the first phase of a major transmission improvement project.
The intervention will include:
Upgrading the Asiekpe–Ho transmission line from 69kV to 161kV
Construction of a 45-kilometre new transmission line
Establishment of a new Bulk Supply Point (BSP) in Ho
The upgrade is expected to significantly stabilize voltage and reduce outages by connecting Ho to the more robust 161kV national grid system.
According to ECG, the region’s ongoing electricity challenges are largely due to an outdated transmission network built in the 1980s, which has failed to keep pace with increasing demand.
While much of Ghana operates on a 161kV system, the Volta Region still relies heavily on a weaker 69kV network—resulting in frequent power fluctuations and outages, particularly during peak hours.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed within one year after contract signing. In the interim, authorities are considering temporary solutions, including the installation of a provisional substation, to provide quicker relief.
Ing. Kpekpena urged the Minister and local stakeholders to facilitate smooth implementation by supporting land acquisition, right-of-way access, compensation processes, and community engagement.
Officials warn that delays in these areas could slow progress on what is being described as a critical intervention for the region’s power stability.
