The Dean of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) in the Volta Region, Mr. Jerry Yaw Ameko, has firmly declared that no MDCE in the region will contest parliamentary seats in the 2028 general elections, describing the move as a strategic decision aimed at preserving party unity and strengthening governance outcomes.
Speaking at the signing of the Performance Agreement Contract between MDCEs and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) in Ho, Mr. Ameko said the collective stance of the MDCEs is to work collaboratively with their respective Members of Parliament (MPs) rather than engage in political competition that could destabilise the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the region.
“Our stance is to work hand-in-hand with our respective MPs to lift the region to greater heights, and not to contest their seats,” Mr. Ameko stated.
Resetting Agenda Demands Absolute Unity
According to the Adaklu District Chief Executive, the government’s Resetting Agenda requires maximum unity, discipline, and cooperation at all levels of leadership, particularly in a politically strategic region such as Volta.
He stressed that any internal contest between MDCEs and sitting MPs could weaken party cohesion, distract attention from development priorities, and slow down the implementation of government policies and flagship projects.
“The Resetting Agenda cannot succeed in an atmosphere of division. Our duty is to strengthen unity, not distort it. No MDCE will create political tension by challenging MPs,” he assured.
Political observers say the declaration sends a strong stabilising signal ahead of the 2028 elections, especially at a time when early political manoeuvring is quietly shaping internal party dynamics across the country.
By ruling out parliamentary ambitions, the MDCEs appear to be redefining their roles strictly as development-driven administrators, focusing on project delivery, decentralisation efficiency, and grassroots economic transformation.
Mr. Ameko explained that the MDCEs’ focus is to complement parliamentary leadership, accelerate local development, and deepen community engagement across the region.
He noted that strong collaboration between MPs and MDCEs would be crucial in:
- Fast-tracking infrastructure development
- Improving health and education outcomes
- Boosting local economic growth
- Enhancing decentralised governance
The announcement has been welcomed by party supporters as a confidence-building move, reinforcing the NDC’s internal discipline, loyalty, and development-first posture in the Volta Region — widely regarded as the party’s traditional stronghold.
The declaration was made during the Performance Agreement Contract signing ceremony, where MDCEs committed themselves to measurable development targets, accountability standards, and service delivery benchmarks under the supervision of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC).
