In a decisive political declaration that is reshaping leadership expectations across the Volta Region, all 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) have formally committed themselves to performance-driven governance, while publicly ruling out any ambition to contest parliamentary seats in the 2028 general elections.
The declaration was made during the signing of the 2026 Performance Agreement Contract between the MDCEs and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), in the presence of their respective Members of Parliament and Coordinating Directors.
Will This Affect Their Parliamentary Ambitions?
Addressing growing public speculation about whether the performance agreement could be a political pathway to Parliament, the Dean of Volta Region MDCEs and District Chief Executive of Adaklu, Mr. Jerry Yaw Ameko, gave a firm response:
“No MDCE in the Volta Region will contest for parliamentary positions in 2028. Our stance is to work hand-in-hand with our MPs to lift the region to greater heights, not to challenge their mandates,” he stated.
According to Mr. Ameko, the government’s Resetting Agenda requires absolute unity, political discipline, and unwavering focus on development delivery, stressing that internal competition would only weaken the region’s collective progress.
He emphasised that the MDCEs have consciously subordinated personal political ambition to collective regional development, describing the move as a strategic sacrifice for long-term growth.
“Our mission is service, not succession politics. The people must see development, not rivalry,” he added.
Political analysts say the announcement removes tension between MDCEs and MPs, which has historically generated internal party conflict, fractured support bases, and slowed development execution in some constituencies.
The Performance Agreement Contract, instituted by the Head of the Local Government Service, is designed as a governance accountability framework, binding MDCEs to:
- Measurable development outcomes
- Transparent administration
- Fiscal discipline
- Enhanced service delivery
- Citizen-centered governance
All 18 MDCEs, their MPs, and Coordinating Directors signed the agreement, underscoring a unified political front and shared development vision.
Resetting Agenda and Party Unity
The signing also aligns directly with President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Agenda, which prioritises results-based leadership, discipline, and grassroots transformation.
Mr. Ameko reaffirmed that no MDCE would act in ways that could destabilise the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the region, assuring party faithful that unity remains the strongest political weapon of the Volta Region.
Community leaders and civil society organisations welcomed the declaration, saying it allows MDCEs to fully concentrate on governance rather than electoral calculations.
“Now the excuse of political ambition is gone. We want to see roads, schools, sanitation systems, markets, hospitals, and jobs,” a Ho-based development advocate told News Volta.
The announcement establishes a new leadership culture in the Volta Region, where development performance outweighs political ambition, setting a benchmark for public office responsibility nationwide.
