Govt to Clear Health Workers’ Salary Arrears by July 2026 — Akandoh Announces Payment Plan

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that government will fully settle salary arrears owed to over 13,500 health workers by July 2026, bringing an end to months of delayed payments.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on April 22, the Minister outlined a phased payment schedule already underway.

  • End of April: Two months’ arrears to be paid
  • End of June: Additional three months cleared
  • End of July: Full settlement completed

According to the Minister, the backlog stems from a mismatch between recruitment and budget allocation, noting that thousands of nurses and midwives were employed without corresponding financial provision.

“We inherited a situation where about 13,500 health workers were employed without budgetary backing,” he explained.

He disclosed that Ghana’s health workforce has expanded significantly—from about 74,000 to nearly 100,000 by 2025—but emphasized that employment remains dependent on available fiscal space.

While acknowledging existing vacancies, the Minister stressed that government can only recruit within its ability to pay salaries, highlighting ongoing efforts to stabilize the sector.

News Volta will continue to track developments as government implements the payment plan for affected health workers.
