Volta Chiefs Empowered to Resolve Disputes: Two-Day Judicial Committee Workshop Opens in Ho

A two-day Capacity Building Workshop for the Judicial Committee of the Volta Region House of Chiefs has opened in Ho, in September 2025, aimed at strengthening the capacity of traditional authorities to address the rising number of chieftaincy disputes across the region.

Jointly organized by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) and the Volta Region House of Chiefs, the workshop seeks to equip committee members with the necessary legal, administrative, and mediation skills to promote fair and efficient dispute resolution within traditional governance systems.

In his address, Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu revealed that the region currently has over 69 active chieftaincy disputes, warning that such conflicts continue to undermine development efforts and community cohesion. He outlined several government interventions, including the digitization of succession records, capacity strengthening for Houses of Chiefs, and greater involvement of traditional leaders in peacebuilding initiatives.

The workshop was officially opened by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, who commended the Judicial Committees for their vital role in ensuring justice and stability. He also announced upcoming reforms, including a review of the Chieftaincy Act and enhanced collaboration between chiefs and local assemblies.

Also present at the opening ceremony was the National Security Adviser to the President, Hon. Prosper Douglas Bani, who joined other dignitaries in reaffirming government’s support for peace, unity, and sustainable development in the Volta Region.

Presided over by Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, the workshop is expected to conclude with a renewed commitment from participants to uphold traditional justice, harmony, and development in the region.
