Water Crisis Hits Volta as Ghana Water Limited Shuts Down Kpeve Treatment Plant

By Hebrews Pouyeli Kumako

Residents across several communities in the Volta Region are bracing for a possible water crisis following the temporary shutdown of the Kpeve Water Treatment Plant by the Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

The shutdown, according to GWL, has become necessary to allow for critical maintenance and technical works aimed at improving the long-term efficiency and reliability of water supply systems serving the affected areas. However, the interruption is expected to significantly disrupt water delivery to households, businesses, schools, and health facilities that depend on the plant for daily water supply.

Communities likely to be impacted include Kpeve, Peki, Have, Goviefe, and surrounding settlements, where residents are already expressing concern over potential shortages and the hardship the temporary closure may cause.

In a notice to the public, Ghana Water Limited urged residents to begin storing adequate amounts of water and to use available supplies judiciously during the shutdown period. The utility provider assured customers that engineers are working diligently to complete the necessary repairs and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

Officials say the maintenance work is essential to prevent future breakdowns and improve the plant’s capacity to deliver safe and reliable potable water to the growing population in the region.

The development has raised concerns among residents, many of whom fear that prolonged disruption could affect sanitation, healthcare delivery, and local economic activities, particularly small businesses that rely heavily on uninterrupted access to water.

Some community members are calling on local authorities and emergency service providers to deploy temporary water supply solutions, including tanker services, to cushion residents against the anticipated hardship.

Water experts have also urged households to adopt conservation measures and avoid panic buying or wasteful use of stored water.

The temporary closure of the Kpeve Treatment Plant comes at a time when several parts of the region are already grappling with infrastructure challenges and increasing demand for essential public utilities.

Ghana Water Limited has appealed for calm and cooperation from the public, assuring affected communities that every effort is being made to minimize the duration of the disruption and restore full water supply promptly.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official communication channels from GWL for updates on the progress of repairs and the expected timeline for the resumption of service.
