Traditional leader Torgbui Nii Kpambi Vedzesu has called on the Government of Ghana and security agencies to urgently strengthen immigration control measures in response to what he describes as increasing irregular migration through the Aflao border.
According to the traditional leader, growing concerns over undocumented immigration—particularly through unapproved routes and informal crossing points around the Aflao border—require immediate attention to safeguard national security, social stability, and economic opportunities for citizens.
He specifically appealed to the Ghana Immigration Service, especially officials stationed at the Aflao Border, to intensify surveillance and enforcement at both official entry points and unauthorized “beat paths” that have reportedly become easy access routes for irregular entrants.
Torgbui Nii Kpambi Vedzesu noted that while Ghana has a proud tradition of hospitality and regional cooperation, effective immigration regulation is essential to ensure that migration remains lawful, orderly, and beneficial to both host communities and migrants.
“We must protect our borders while upholding our national values. Proper documentation, security screening, and strict monitoring are necessary to maintain peace and order,” he emphasized
The traditional leader outlined several long-term risks that could emerge if irregular migration remains unchecked, particularly in border communities such as Aflao.

Weak border controls can make it easier for criminal networks to exploit informal routes for activities such as smuggling, human trafficking, and cross-border theft, potentially threatening public safety.
Pressure on Local Jobs and Services
A sudden increase in undocumented migration may place added pressure on employment opportunities, housing, healthcare, and other public services, especially in already stretched communities.
Identity and Documentation Risks
Without proper registration and verification, authorities may face difficulties tracking residents, enforcing laws, and ensuring accountability.
Community Tensions
Competition over limited economic opportunities can sometimes create misunderstandings or tensions between local residents and newcomers if not managed carefully and fairly.
National Planning and Resource Allocation
Accurate migration records are essential for government planning, infrastructure development, and effective delivery of social services across the country.
Torgbui Nii Kpambi Vedzesu stressed that calls for stronger immigration enforcement should not be misunderstood as hostility toward foreigners, but rather as a necessary step toward responsible border management and national protection.
He urged authorities to combine stricter border monitoring with respectful treatment of migrants, proper screening procedures, and closer collaboration with local chiefs, community leaders, and residents who can help identify irregular crossings and support lawful migration practices.
The appeal adds to growing public discussions about border security in Aflao, one of Ghana’s busiest international entry points, and highlights the need for coordinated action to ensure that Ghana remains secure, welcoming, and well-prepared for future migration challenges.
