The Government of Ghana has officially declared every Wednesday as National Fugu Day, encouraging all Ghanaians, both home and abroad, to wear Fugu (Batakari) as part of efforts to preserve, promote, and celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.
The announcement was contained in a formal directive issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, signed by the Minister, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP), and dated February 10, 2026.
Promoting Culture, Identity and National Pride
According to the Ministry, the initiative is aimed at deepening national cultural awareness, affirming Ghana’s identity, and projecting Ghana’s heritage with pride to the global community.
The directive calls on all citizens, institutions, corporate bodies, schools, and public offices to dedicate Wednesdays to wearing Fugu in its diverse designs, patterns, and creative expressions, complemented by its distinctive accessories.
“This initiative is intended to deepen national cultural awareness, affirm our identity, and project Ghana’s heritage with pride to the world,” the statement said.
Boost for Creative Economy and Jobs
Beyond its cultural value, the Ministry emphasized that the initiative is expected to generate significant social and economic benefits, particularly for local weavers, designers, artisans, and traders across the textile and fashion value chain.
The move is projected to stimulate local production, expand businesses, create jobs, and increase commercial opportunities nationwide, while strengthening Ghana’s creative arts and fashion industry.
Strengthening Unity and Cultural Confidence
The government further expressed optimism that the collective embrace of Fugu would help strengthen national unity, promote cultural confidence, and serve as a symbol of Ghana’s identity, pride, and self-expression.
“The government hopes that this collective embrace of Fugu will strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy, and serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence,” the statement added.

The declaration has already sparked excitement across social media, cultural circles, fashion communities, and traditional institutions, with many praising the initiative as timely, patriotic, and economically empowering.
Cultural analysts say the move could elevate Ghana’s indigenous fashion to global recognition, similar to how Kente has become an international cultural symbol.
