The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has intensified public education in bushfire-prone communities across the Volta and Oti Regions to safeguard electricity infrastructure during the dry Harmattan season.
The sensitisation campaign targeted vulnerable communities, raising awareness on the causes and dangers of bushfires and their destructive impact on electricity installations, including poles, transformers, and transmission cables.
As part of practical preventive efforts, ECG staff and community members jointly cleared bushes around electricity installations to create protective fire belts — bare strips of land measuring between two and five metres — designed to prevent the spread of fires.
In the Nkwanta District, District Engineer Mr Bernard Addo commended residents of Odomi, Odomi Camp, Keri, Kai Camp, Abrewankor, Kromoase, and Shari for their enthusiastic participation, stressing that community ownership is key to sustaining fire prevention efforts.
Regional General Manager Ms Christina Jatoe-Kaleo explained that bushfires remain one of the leading causes of power disruptions in northern Volta and Oti districts, largely due to
“indiscriminate burning, poor farming practices, and careless disposal of fire sources.
“Preventing bushfires means preventing blackouts, infrastructure losses, and safety risks,” she stressed.”
