Construction works on the Avoeme AstroTurf Mini Stadium, a flagship community sports project being undertaken by Torgbui Tenuvi II (Mr. Felix Akonta Akakpo), are progressing steadily, with massive earthworks currently underway at the project site.
A News Volta field visit to the construction area, revealed over 400 tipper trucks of sand already heaped and compacted on the park, marking a major milestone in the land reclamation and foundation phase of the project. The extensive sand filling is aimed at raising the pitch level, improving drainage, and preventing flooding during heavy rains.
When completed, the Avoeme AstroTurf Stadium will become the third AstroTurf football facility in the Volta Region, after the Hohoe Sports Stadium, inaugurated in November 2024, and the WAFA SC AstroTurf Pitch in Sogakope, widely used for elite football training and competitions.
The Avoeme project holds significant regional and cross-border importance, given Avoeme’s close proximity to Lomé, Togo. Sports analysts and community leaders say the facility will serve as a hub for youth development, talent discovery, and international sports exchange between Ghana and Togo.
Potential benefits of the stadium include:
- Promotion of youth sports development and talent nurturing
- Creation of employment opportunities for artisans, vendors, and sports administrators
- Boost to local economic activity through tournaments and events
- Enhancement of sports tourism and cross-border sporting relations
- Reduction in youth social vices through positive engagement and discipline
News Volta also interacted with youth groups across parts of the Volta Region, who expressed excitement, gratitude, and pride in the vision being executed by Torgbui Tenuvi II.
Many described him as a “visionary leader” whose actions are transforming communities through practical development.
A youth leader from Aflao stated:
“What Torgbui Tenuvi II is doing is beyond politics. This is real development. We call him Torgbui Talk and Do because when he speaks, he delivers. This AstroTurf stadium will change lives.”
Another young footballer from Klikor added:
“This project gives hope to young talents. Many of us dream of becoming professional footballers, but we lack proper facilities. This stadium will help shape our future.”
Across the interviews, the youth offered prayers for divine strength, protection, and wisdom for Torgbui Tenuvi II, asking God to continue guiding him in his mission to uplift the people of Ketu South and the wider Volta Region.
“May God bless him with long life and more resources to continue this great work,” a female youth organizer prayed.
Community elders and opinion leaders described the Avoeme AstroTurf Mini Stadium as a legacy project that will redefine grassroots sports development in southern Volta, especially within the Ketu South enclave.
With construction rapidly progressing, anticipation continues to build as residents look forward to a modern, world-class sporting facility that will place Avoeme firmly on the sports map of Ghana and West Africa.
