The Paramount Chief and President of the Somé Traditional Council,Torgbiga Adamah III of Ketu South, Volta Region , addressing Somé Tutuza, the 2024 edition, call on the Government to amend the 1992 Constitution to allow Traditional Councils to lead local governance, safeguarding our land, natural resources, and traditional institutions.That he join the call for broader constitutional reforms to address other systemic issues in the country.
According to Torgbiga Adamah, our democracy and local government structures have not effectively facilitated the level of development we seek at the districts level. Partisan politics has undermined traditional values,creating divisions that impact chieftaincy, communities, and even families.
“That despite being the cornerstone of the country’s longest-standing democracy, the constitution has guided Ghana through 32 years of governance, positioning it as a model for other African nations. However, with evolving political and socio-economic landscapes, many are questioning whether it still meets the nation’s needs and answer is NO because it all seems like the 1992 Constitution is only enriching the Politicians hence putting yokes and shackles on custodian of the land. I am therefore urging the Honourable Chieftancy Minister, Honourable Regional Minister and government to take this matter up urgently. Torgbiga added.
Torgbiga Adamah III continues to urge the Electoral Commission to ensure fairness in the 2024 general elections and to engage with all political parties respectfully, Political parties must also refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and prioritize peaceful dialogue.
