Ghana has officially announced a reduction in the application fee for the standard 32-page ordinary passport from GH₵500 to GH₵350, signalling a major move to make international travel more accessible to its citizens.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who said the reduction is part of a full-spectrum passport service reform that also includes a chip-embedded e-passport rollout, 24-hour service operations, courier delivery and application tracking.
However, the new fee structure will only take effect once Parliament approves the amendment to the Fees and Charges Act, according to the Ministry.
This change follows public outcry last year when passport fees soared under the previous administration. The Ministry emphasized that the reform will not compromise security standards, and that the cost savings will be achieved through a public-private partnership model to modernise the passport system.
Ghanaian travellers, students, diaspora returnees and business travellers are thus poised to benefit from a more affordable and efficient passport issuance process, pending the legislative finalisation.
