Blue Ventures Senegal Engages Denu Fishing Community on Sustainable Fishing, Record Keeping and Livelihood Empowerment

Officials from Blue Ventures Senegal, led by Nana Kweigyah, National President of the Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG), and Mr. Wisdom Mordedzi Passy, National Secretary of the Small Pelagic Co-Management Committee (SPCC), on February 24, 2026, engaged key stakeholders of the Denu Landing Beach in a major sensitisation and capacity-building programme aimed at promoting sustainable fishing practices and improved livelihoods.

The Blue Ventures Senegal delegation, made up of Director Prudence, Courtney, Dr. Awa Sokhna, held an interactive session with chief fishermen, canoe owners, women fish processors, crew members, and fish traders, focusing on record keeping, responsible fishing methods, fish processing standards, and proper net usage and maintenance.

The team educated participants on the importance of accurate record keeping, explaining that proper data collection helps in tracking fish stocks, planning fishing activities, improving income management, and influencing policy decisions.

They also emphasized responsible fishing techniques, the appropriate types of nets to use, and best practices for maintaining fishing gear to ensure sustainability and environmental protection. Fish processors were further trained on hygienic fish handling, improved smoking techniques, and storage methods to enhance product quality and market value.

Speaking to News Volta, Nana Kweigyah said the engagement forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen small-scale fisheries management and empower coastal communities.

“Blue Ventures is proud to be part of a growing global movement to build resilient oceans and uplift small-scale fishers. This movement puts fishers at the centre, amplifying their voices and defending their rights while promoting sustainable livelihoods,” he stated.

During the engagement, fisherfolk and fish processors appealed to Blue Ventures and relevant authorities to support the development of critical fishing infrastructure at the Denu Landing Beach.

They specifically called for the construction of a mini fishing quay and fishing harbour, which would help address challenges related to offloading of fish, canoe anchorage, and safety during bad weather conditions.

A chief fisherman at Denu told News Volta:

“Our biggest challenge is the lack of proper landing and anchorage facilities. When the sea is rough, landing becomes dangerous. A mini harbour will protect lives, boats, and our livelihoods.”

A woman fish processor also stressed the need for financial and logistical support:

“We need improved smoking facilities and financial assistance to expand our businesses. With better equipment, we can increase production and earn more to support our families.”

Officials of Blue Ventures reaffirmed their commitment to supporting community-driven solutions, noting that sustainable fisheries management can only succeed when local stakeholders are fully involved.

Mr. Wisdom Mordedzi Passy emphasized that continuous education, strong local leadership, and institutional support remain vital for the long-term survival of Ghana’s fishing industry.

“Our goal is to empower fishing communities to manage their resources wisely while improving incomes and food security,” he noted.

The engagement at Denu Landing Beach forms part of ongoing efforts by Blue Ventures Senegal and its partners to promote responsible fishing, strengthen coastal economies, and protect marine ecosystems across West Africa.
