South Tongu District Holds Public Hearing on 2026–2029 Development Plan

The South Tongu District Assembly has held a public hearing to present and discuss its 2022–2025 Medium-Term Development Plan with traditional leaders, assembly members, departmental heads, and community representatives.

Opening the session, Hon. Victoria Dzeklo, Presiding Member of the Assembly, welcomed the chiefs and participants and explained that the hearing was to provide updates on the district’s development priorities and gather feedback from stakeholders.

Presenting the plan, Mr. Mohammed Abu-Shiraz, the District Planning Officer, said the Assembly had implemented 69.9% of planned projects as of June 2025. The plan, developed after extensive consultations across 40 communities, identified and prioritized over 100 development issues in sectors such as education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure.

He outlined key projects including:

  • Construction of a two-storey modern market at Dabala with 30 shops, washrooms, and a web center.
  • Building of 10 classroom blocks with wash facilities and provision of school furniture.
  • Establishment of a ceramics center and museum to promote tourism and local arts.
  • Expansion of irrigation systems, farm roads, and storage facilities to boost agriculture.
  • Construction of nine new health centers, mechanized boreholes, and public toilets to improve health and sanitation.
  • Creation of animal shelters and a district cemetery to address environmental and public health concerns.

The entire development plan is estimated to cost GH¢172 million, and the Planning Officer emphasized the need for increased funding, private sector participation, and donor support to bridge financing gaps.

Mr. Augustine Frimpong, Assistant Director of the Assembly, urged community members to support the plan through active participation and prompt payment of taxes. He also called on assembly members to educate their communities on the Assembly’s policies and ongoing projects.

The public hearing concluded with a call for collaboration among government agencies, civil society, and development partners to ensure successful implementation of the plan for the progress of the South Tongu District.
