Chiefs in Aflao have called on the government of John Dramani Mahama to fulfil the promise of constructing the Aflao Modern Market, expressing concern over the project’s lack of progress.
The appeal was led by the President of the Aflao Traditional Council, Torgbuiga Amenya Fiti V, during an engagement with key government officials.
Addressing the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, and the Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Paramount Chief described the situation as worrying.
According to him, the Aflao Modern Market project has not seen visible progress since its announcement, adding that it appears the project has been put on hold whiles the land owners have made the proposed use land available for the project.
Torgbuiga Amenya Fiti V stressed that the market is critical to it would Boost local trade and economic activity , Support traders and small businesses ,Improve revenue generation in the municipality
The chiefs made an emotional appeal to government to Restart and complete the project, Provide clear timelines, Ensure transparency in its implementation
They emphasized that Aflao, being a major border town, deserves a modern market infrastructure to match its economic importance.
The traditional leaders expressed hope that government will respond swiftly and deliver on its promise to the people of Aflao.
Divisional Chief of Aflao, Torgbui Nii Kpambi Vedzesu V, has expressed concern over what he describes as the slow pace of work on the proposed Aflao Modern Market.
Speaking to News Volta, he lamented that the government led by John Dramani Mahama and its officials have not shown enough urgency in advancing the project.
According to the chief, the market project has not seen visible progress and appears to have stalled, despite its importance to the local economy.
He stressed that the delay is affecting traders and limiting economic opportunities in the municipality.Torgbui Vedzesu V highlighted Aflao’s unique position as a major border town close to Lomé, noting that the proximity presents huge opportunities for cross-border trade and commerce.
He called on government and relevant authorities to accelerate work on the project, emphasizing that Aflao deserves infrastructure that matches its economic importance in the sub-region.
