Ketu South Municipal Assembly Donates To Person With Disabilities 

Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the Ketu South Municipal Assembly of the Volta region have received items worth thousands of cedis to help them support themselves and their families.

The distribution through the disability common fund is intended to alleviate the plight of PWDs by assisting them in establishing their own businesses.

Mr Selase Assor, the Ketu South Head of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, said that these donations from the government of Ghana to ensure self-dependence. “One of the social protection programmes of government is to support persons living with disability to improve their lives, by giving them economic empowerment through income generation activities, medical, technical aid, and educational help.”
He also indicated that provision would be made for those who were yet to benefit from the programme.


 
Refrigerators, industrial sewing machine and assorted provisions like bag of rice , biscuit,sugar, soft drinks among other items were distributed.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to present the items, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Maxwell Lugudor indicated that the Assembly was committed to, supporting and alleviating the economic hardship of PWDs and that the items were being donated to enable them set-up their own income generating activities to sustain their daily livelihood.

He said, hitherto, the component of District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) for Persons with Disabilities were given in cash to beneficiaries but noticed from routine monitoring of the usage of the funds that they were often misapplied. Hence, the Assembly has taken the decision to procure items to set them up in their chosen trades or businesses.

Mr Lugudor said the vice president is putting plans towards people with disabilities who intended to further their education, to be exempted from paying school fee in tertiary or university.

Mr Gilbert Avemeagh the Municipal Coordinating Director also advised the beneficiaries to put the items into a proper use. He urged them to use it well and even purchase another to expand their businesses for a better life.


In an interview Volta Forum, many of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Municipal Assembly for its dedication to improving their lives.
