Ketu South Municipality has presented its vision for Integrated Solid and Liquid Waste Management and Flood Resilience under the Local Authority Exchange Programme: North Rhine-Westphalia–Ghana, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The initiative, presented by the Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Nicholas Worclahie, in Germany focuses on strengthening the Municipality’s capacity to address pressing challenges in waste management, sanitation, flooding and environmental sustainability while creating opportunities for investment, employment and inclusive economic development.
The MCE highlighted the Municipality’s interest in deepening partnerships in rural and urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH), environmental management and investment promotion.
According to the Municipality’s vision, an integrated approach to solid and liquid waste management would help improve water security, safe sanitation, public health and environmental protection, while also supporting the creation of economic opportunities within Ketu South.
Dekeme Waste Site Identified as Key Priority
A major component of the initiative is the accumulated solid-waste heap at Dekeme in Aflao, which has become a significant environmental and public-health concern.
As part of the proposed intervention, technical preparatory studies are expected to establish reliable evidence on the quantity and composition of the accumulated waste, as well as examine leachate pathways, site stability, emissions and the interaction between the waste site and local drainage systems.
The findings will provide the technical foundation for determining an appropriate and sustainable intervention for the site.
From Environmental Challenge to Economic Opportunity
The Municipality’s broader vision is to move beyond treating waste and flooding solely as environmental challenges and instead explore ways of transforming them into opportunities for economic growth, job creation and sustainable urban development.
The partnership discussions are therefore expected to continue around practical solutions in waste management, sanitation, drainage, flood resilience, environmental protection and investment mobilisation.
Through the Local Authority Exchange Programme, Ketu South is positioning itself to strengthen international and local partnerships while developing practical solutions that respond to the Municipality’s growing environmental and infrastructure needs.
